Castle Petronell
The Castle
Ballroom
Located half-way between Vienna and Bratislava, Castle Petronell
counts, artistically and architecturally, among the most significant
17th century castles in Austria. Situated at the very edge
of the Danube terraces, it was built at least in part on foundations
existing since Roman times. The precise location of the foundations
is the subject of an ongoing study.
The castle is located in the vicinity of the Carnuntum Archaeological
Park and adjacent to the National Park March-Donauauen, and
is thus not only a component of the largest archaeological
excavation site in Austria, but also one of the most important
nature preserves of the country.
